Career Connections Newsletter June 1

Well, this is it! You are reading the last Career Connections of the year. Have a great Summer!

Skills Center Summer School Application Now Open

The Department of College and Career Readiness and the Seattle Skills Center have some great summer opportunities for students to earn credit in Career and Technical Education (CTE), which students need for graduation.

Fewer classes are being offered this summer than usual, but they do have two Intro to Maritime Vessel Operations classes, two Intro to Construction Trades, two Family Health classes, as well as other popular summer classes like Intro to Engineering and Intro to Medical Careers.

Did you know:

  • Summer Skills Center courses are open to all incoming 9th – 12th grade SPS students
  • Skills Center classes are free
  • Students can earn 0.5 high school CTE credit for all summer Skills Center classes
  • All summer courses are in-person but also include asynchronous work that will require a laptop or other device.
  • Students must attend class regularly and participate to earn credit
  • Maritime Vessel Operations aboard the schooner Adventuress has a different schedule and other requirements (see application for details)
  • Transportation is not provided, but they can help you get an Orca card if you do not already have one

Please see the program web page for course descriptions and the online application for open summer registration. The School Year application for 2023-24 is also open, but classes are filling up, so if you are interested in these, you’ll need to sign up very soon.

Burke Museum Offering Paid Opportunity to Explore Local History

The Burke Museum is offering a summer learning experience in the Central District that merges archaeology, cultural education, and STEM. Students will work with Burke staff, UW students, and local community members to develop a new understanding of the neighborhood’s history.

Participants will use archaeological techniques to conduct local deep histories and unearth the layers of natural and cultural history that make this specific place what it is today — one piece of the larger story of Black migration in the state of Washington.

This will be an SPS Work-Based Learning experience with the possibility of earning .5 CTE credit at the completion of the program. To be eligible to apply, students must be 16 or older by July 10, 2023. Black students are strongly encouraged to apply.

This program includes a stipend for completion.

Dates: Monday-Friday, July 10-28 at 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Location:

  • July 10-14: Burke Museum
  • Weeks Two and Three: Central or South end Seattle School Building – TBD
