When to Keep Students Home

At SPS, we are committed to keeping our school communities safe. You can help us by keeping your student home and getting them tested for COVID-19 when they have one or more COVID-like symptoms for any duration.

If your student tests positive for COVID-19, keep your student home and contact your school. Seattle Public Schools is following Public Health Seattle & King County guidelines to determine when it is safe for students to return to school. Students with COVID symptoms should stay home until:

  • They receive a negative COVID-19 test AND
  • 24 hours after fever has resolved (without fever-reducing medication) and
  • Other symptoms have improved.
  • OR if alternative diagnosis by health care provider, follow provider directions and isolate per condition diagnosed (whichever isolation is longer).

Clearing Absences & Early Dismissals

If you are home sick, have a parent/guardian call the attendance office 206-252-4814 or send an email to excuse absences, early dismissals, etc. to roosevelths.attendance@seattleschools.org. The attendance office will then clear that absence. Parents/guardians must clear an absence through the attendance office within 2 days of their return to school.

Vacation

When your student will miss 3 or more days of school.  They need to fill out a Pre-Planned Absence Form no later than 3 days before the absence will occur. RHS requires a preplanned absence form to be submitted for any absences that are 3 days or more.  The form is presented to each teacher for their signature and allows an opportunity to make up any missed assignments.  The form can be found on our website.  Your student can also pick up hard copies outside of the attendance office. Please reach out with any questions.

Late Arrival

Students who arrive late to school, must check in with the Attendance Office (excused or not) prior to arriving class. The attendance specialist will update their attendance according to the reason for their late arrival. The parent/guardian must call or email the attendance office to have a late arrival excused.

If your student is less, then 10 mins late from when the bell rings they will be marked late. If your student is 10 mins or more late to class, they will be marked absent until a parent/guardian contacts the attendance office with a district approved reason for the late arrival or the absence from class.

Important: Notes from parents/guardians must have a valid parent/guardian phone number if the student is less than 18 years old.

Leaving Early

Students leaving early should request a Temporary Dismissal pass as soon as possible (before school, during passing period, or during lunch).

Parents needing to retrieve their student for an appointment need to call the Attendance Office at 206-252-4814 or send an email to roosevelths.attendance@seattleschools.org as soon as possible.

Retrieving students at the end of the day is not always successful and can be chaotic. Calling early in the morning or as soon as you know the student needs to leave yields the best and most accurate service.

Roosevelt Attendance Policy

Compulsory Attendance Letter

You are expected to be in school and actively involved in each class daily. Punctual attendance is the first requirement for success–both here and in the “real” world. The depth of coverage of material in class requires active student engagement, so when you are absent you are not actively engaged in the learning and it’s hard to replicate that when you return.

A large part of your learning takes place during class discussions and participation. Many of our teachers use project based learning methods and if you are absent, not only do you miss out on the learning, but also any group you are working in is affected. Attendance and class participation are a basis for grading in classes. Check the syllabus for each class to see how this affects your grade.

On time, on task behaviors are expected for all students.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are parents expected to do when their child is absent from school?

Parent/guardians must notify Roosevelt in written or verbal form within two days of any absence. If you make this notification in a written notice only you must include the reason why your child is absent, the date of the absence and a valid parent/guardian phone number for students younger than 18 years old. Parents can notify Roosevelt of student absences over the phone as long as the reason is legitimate.

What absences can be excused?

Unplanned absences are excused when the student’s person illness or injury, or the illness, injury or death of a family member, prevents the student from attending school. You must notify the school within 48 hours of the absence. The school may require a note from your doctor if the student is absent due to illness or injury for five consecutive days.

Planned absences are when the parent submits a Pre-Planned Absence Form (also found in the the Attendance office) to the Attendance office at least three days before the start of the planned absence and the Principal or Assistant Principal approves the absence. Planned absences include a family trip, extended medical stay, religious holiday or a special one-day event. The school may require your student to complete missed assignments and/or make up other academic assignments for an extended planned absence. Short term absences due to discipline of your child are also excused.

What absences are unexcused?

All other absences are considered unexcused. A student who misses individual classes will be marked as having one or more “unexcused absences”.

Any absence, whether planned or unplanned, will remain unexcused when the parent does not provide an excuse within (two days) for unplanned absences and (three days) in advance for planned absences.

However, a parent’s request to “excuse my child’s absence” without a stated reason will result in the absence remaining unexcused.

Unexcused Absences

  • Sleeping late
  • Car breaking down
  • Traffic
  • Student having to translate
  • Leaving class without permission
  • Leaving class with permission but not returning as assigned
